Sa surface se trouve à 18 mètres, en moyenne, au-dessus du niveau de la mer.<br />Le grand plan d’eau stocke 18 millions de mètres cubes d’eau. Relié au barrage de Vinça par le canal de Perpignan (dit « le Ruisseau de la Ville » ou « Els Canals »), il constitue un réservoir inestimable, autant pour l’arrosage des cultures localisées en contrebas de la retenue que pour les Canadairs qui y écopent, à la triste occasion de chaque incendie de forêt ou de garrigue, et en particulier lorsque la Tramontane ne permet pas l’écopage en mer, il irrigue le Golf de Saint Cyprien, permet d'écrêter les crues et constitue une réseve potentielle d'eau potable pour Perpignan et ses environs.<br />La carpe est indiscutablement « le fleuron de la faune piscicole ». Nos homologues belges, hollandais, britanniques, allemands la taquinent non sans convoitise. Certains spécimens, de plus de 20 kg, sont régulièrement pêchés.<br />Le peuplement du grand plan d’eau se compose de sandres, perches, black-bass, brochets, anguilles, tanches, gardons, rotengles, chevesnes.
